Tourism Challenges Forum

March 7 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Invitation Only

What tourism problems can be solved in 6/12/24 months?

What are solvable challenges facing the tourism industry locally, nationally, and globally? Startup Queenstown Lakes is bringing together thought leaders and executives from the tourism and innovation community across New Zealand for a one-day Tourism Challenges Forum to discuss and identify existing, solvable problems facing the tourism and adventure community that new tech and innovation startups, as well as established companies, can tackle.

Participants will work in large and small group sessions to discuss and prioritise problems customers would pay to solve that propels New Zealand to a global leadership role in solving tourism's biggest challenges.

Participants will leave on a chartered bus from Queenstown, and be hosted at The Headwaters, a sustainable accommodation and retail venture in scenic Glenorchy. Programming will commence and conclude on the bus trip.

There is no cost to attend this forum, which is supported our organizing partners.

This is an invitation-only event, seeking participation from those keen to build a list of business opportunities (social or commercial) that need to be solved for the tourism and adventure community.  Want to request an invite or have someone you'd recommend? Email rsvp@entrepreneurship.co.nz

As a participant, you will:

  1. Task #1 - Identify solvable problems facing transportation, accommodation, councils, DoC, operators, finance, education, health and safety, and other areas of tourism that need commercially viable solutions by NZ and global buyers.
  2. Task #2 - Prioritise the criteria, impact, and value of those problems so that they can be presented to innovators throughout NZ to tackle in our nation's incubators, accelerators, and private enterprise programs.

You will help create a master list of problems that can make an immediate impact in the industry. You will help create the criteria of impact, commercial value, and insights.

What will the outcome be?

These outcomes will be distributed to all participants and shared with innovators, tech companies, and R&D groups throughout NZ to spark new startups or R&D efforts to solve the most commercially viable problems and feed incubators, accelerators, and tourism R&D teams.

Who should attend?

You want to help identify commercially viable problems that innovators, hackers, founders, and researchers should be solving that can impact the tourism and adventure industry in the next 24 months.

You are able to identify and articulate definable problems with business outcomes that could realistically make a positive impact in the industry.

You are willing to put out ideas that others, including competitors, will have exposure to. You have problems that you need help solving from others who  may have the technical or professional expertise that you or your organisation lack.

Why host this forum? Is the Queenstown Lakes District looking for more tourism businesses?

Startup Queenstown Lakes is working to diversify our economy beyond tourism, hospitality, and construction. To stimulate our knowledge and innovation community, we must also recognise that we have a strength in tourism and adventure sports that should be leveraged to spur new technologies and businesses that generate opportunities in our district and the country as a whole.

This forum is not about launching new bungee operators or creating an alternative campervan travel app for backpackers. This forum is about focusing on existing challenges faced by the industry that can be solved in a 6/12/24 month timeline that we can package up and present to New Zealand innovators and startups to build commercially viable IP.
